Who Are We?

We are Rights, Education, Access, Democracy, or READ!

We are a campaign hoping to raise awareness and spread information about the adverse effects that book bans can cause. While our office is located in Washington, D.C., this campaign focuses specifically on the Southern states of Alabama, Florida, and Texas. We hope to be a resource for students and teachers in these regions by providing education resources about the impacts of book bans. Even after out campaign is over, we hope to still be a resource for those continuing this fight.

What Are We Doing?

We have three overarching goals of this campaign. We want to warn about the adverse effects of book bans, mobilize educators, students, and parents to take action against book bans in their schools, and call the community to action against book bans. How are we going to achieve each goal?

Some of the adverse effects of books bans include: the elimination of diverse perspectives essential for intellectual growth, the hindering of critical thinking skills, and the ability to think independently (American University). We intend to mobilize educators, students, and parents to take action by providing these communities--specifically in Alabama, Florida, and Texas--with resources about book bans and what they can do. Once communities have these resources, we are able to call them to action. We want to encourage people to read banned books, call their local authorities, including representatives and legislators, and participate in our planned events to not only gain more information, but join the fight against book bans.
